it’s impossible to give Arkaea anything more than the weakest of ratings for their turgid pillaging of tired musical styles.
…both albums are highly recommended as classy examples of a genre that has recently returned to the limelight. All hail Metal Minds for their devotion to unearthing metal gems.
This is a monumental album that should see Paradise Lost at the very top of a scene that they unwittingly spawned almost two decades ago. Remarkable.
Arguably not as good as ‘Doomsday machine’ this is still a worthwhile disc, particularly for newcomers to the band who have not heard the original versions, or rabid fans who just have to have everything the band put their name to, but for casual listeners it’s just not quite engrossing enough to be listed in the essential category
It is an exciting time for James Blackshaw. Having signed to the eternally credible Young God record label (founded by musical anti-hero Michael Gira from Swans and Angels Of Light) and released an album that can only be described as absolutely unique. With superb production, eleven tracks that rarely dip below the classic level and a renewed sense of purpose Alice in chains deserve to return to the vaunted place they once occupied at the head of the alternative rock pile. This is a superb album from a unique band.
